There have been numerous writings and discussion on goal setting ,however from what I have read and tried to put into practice the following is the gist :
1.Set achievable goals :
It is easy to set goals ,but what is important is to set achievable goals. These my be small goals that can be easily accomplished. This is important in that it gives one a sense of accomplishment and confidence to set and achieve bigger goals.Achieving goals also gives you credibility.
2.Clearly define your goals
It is essential to clearly define the goals by articulating the same in a white sheet of paper.Clearly write down 5 important goals that you must accomplish by the end of the year. These can in turn be divided into quarterly goals and even monthly goals.Spending a few minutes on goal setting will be a rewarding activity in the long run.
3.Setting time bound goals
Goals which are vaguely defined and are not time bound remain hazy and probably are not achieved. It is essential to set a time limit for the accomplishment of the goals. This makes it very specific and measurable.
4.Doing unpleasant tasks first
When we have big goals to achieve, these are often closely linked to the accomplishment of smaller goals.Again among these ,there will be some pleasant tasks and some unpleasant ones.My priority will be to first complete the unpleasant tasks .In any case the activities and tasks which are pleasant will be getting done, largely due to our being in the comfort zone.
5.Goals must be measurable
Unless a goal can be measured and quantified it cannot be monitored and assessed. Periodical assessment of one’s progress cannot be done without a measurable yardstick.
6.Set a definite time frame
Again without a definite time frame for the achievement of a goal, one really cannot have a firm grip on achievement of the goal. Setting a time frame gives us a greater sense of focus and momentum.
